System Crash after transactional log filled filesystem

Dear gurus,

We have an issue in our PRD system under FlexFrame platform. We SAP NW 7.4 (SP03) with ASE 15.7.0.042 (SuSe SLES 11 SP1) running as BW system.

While uploading data from ERP system, the transactional log was filled. We can see in <SID>.log:

Can't allocate space for object 'syslogs' in database '<SID>' because 'logsegment' segment is full/has no free extents. If you ran out of space in syslogs, dump the transaction log. Otherwise, use ALTER DATABASE to increase the size of the segment.

After this, we increase the transactional log (disk resize). Then, executed ALTER DATABASE <SID> log on <LOGDEVICE> = '<size>'

While ALTER is running the log filesystem was filled (100%), after this, <SID>.log began to grow tremendously.

We stopped Sybase and now, when we try start it all FF node will be down. The filesystem has free space (around 10 GB)

Could you help us?

Add: We think that a posible solution could be to delete the transactional log due to the fact that we understand that the failure is related to this log (maybe corrupted?)

Urgent:

ASE 15.7

I tried a cross-platform dump and load after running sp_flushstats , checkpoint on the source database,

while loading on the destination server Il get the error 'database not quiesced , run sp_flushstats'

Tried

>quiesce database hold_sct hold sctdb for external dump to "/dbdumps/sctdb/sctdb.gtlmain.20140612.dmp"

go

This did not work dump did not take place : Message in the log indicated quiesce completed successfully

Process 208 successfully executed QUIESCE DATABASE with HOLD option for tag hold_sct. Processes trying to issue IO operation on the quiesced database(s) will be suspended until user executes Quiesce Database command with RELEASE option.

I tried breaking up the command

1. quiesce database hold_sct hold sctdb for external dump

2. dump database sctdb to "/dbdumps/sctdb/sctdb.gtlmain.20140612.dmp"

this message is displayed

QUIESCE DATABASE is in progress on database sctdb. After it completes, this dump will resume automatically.

dump database command is locked by the quiesce command ,

Does this take a long time (DB size is only 3GB)

Quick solution really appreciated

Important Information

An issue has been identified that can potentially cause incorrect results in an SAP Business Warehouse system running on SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise.
The problem has been observed whenever the optimization goal
'allrows_dss' or another optimization goal that includes optcriteria 'advanced_aggregation'is used for an SQL statement. This is typically the case for SAP BW systems. SAP ERP systems running on ASE are not affected. In SAP ERP systems optimization goal 'allrows_mix' has been configured.

Details and corrections are available in SAP Note 2026328- SYB: Incorrect results with SUM aggregation on decimal fields. We strongly recommend to implement the corrections in SAP BW as soon as possible.

Getting Started with SAP Applications Using SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise

The aim of this document is to help you get started with the SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) database that is run with SAP applications.

Continuous Availability Solutions for SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise

Over the past years, SAP ASE has supported a number of high availability solutions that work as a complement to hardware solutions in providing reduced downtime and recovery effort for applications. ASE HADR in SAP ASE 16 will enhance the offerings, bringing the same transparent client failover, zero data loss, and ease-of-use capability that cluster systems enjoy with ASE installations that are long distances apart.

On the Road to an Enterprise Cloud

Customer demands for support of virtualization are rapidly growing. SAP offers support for running its applications in virtualized cloud environments. You can start your projects and can bring the innovations from SAP into production in a matter of weeks instead of months, with complete flexibility of deployment choice.
SAP Landscape Virtualization Management (LVM) is available for SAP Business Suite on SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise.

For more information, read thisarticle, and SAP Notes 1630050 and 1492000.

DBA Cockpit: Automatic Table Maintenance for SAP ASE

Maintaining tables, indexes and data partitions is crucial for productive database systems. Continuous insertion, update and deletion of data induces fragmentation, bad cluster ratios and inaccurate optimizer statistics. The article shows how the DBA Cockpit and its automatic table maintenance for SAP ASE ensures good cluster ratios on tables and indexes, frees up unused space and ensures accurate optimizer statistics.

General Availability of SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise

SAP Business Suite on ASE is available for SAP Business Suite 7i2010, 7i2011, and 7i2013.

SAP ASE Best Practice latest update

Hello experts,

just wondering if somebody already reviewed thoroughly latest guide for best practices on SAP Sybase ASE?

I am talking about the document from note 1680803 - SYB: Migration to SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise - Best Practice (former note 1722359 - SYB: Running SAP applications on SAP ASE - Best Practice).

The guide for normal runtime operation was merged with the guide for migration, but there are some contradictory statements.

Apart from that the study case is again designed for server with huge memory and lot of CPU cores (so not so real case normally, I wonder who setup so often such huge servers...), I have found some inconsistencies.

E.g. in part "Reconfigure Engines and Parallel Processing", they talk about to limit ASE engines to 16, but the command configures 32.

alter thread pool syb_default_pool with thread count = 32, idle timeout = 2000

No change to the previous setup for migration. Is this just typo? I understand it should be 16, and then also number of network tasks for normal operation would be 4 (as mentioned in the beginning of guide that normally you set up 1 per 3-4 engnes). If this is not typo, then number of network tasks is wrong as it should be 8.

Also they introduced idle timeout, but only talking about ERP and possible lower value for Solman - does this mean that for BW you keep default value (which if I am not mistaken is 100)? As per ADM540 you should even decrease this timeout when SAP system is sharing server with database - I know that document is old, but is again contradictory, not saying that it is wrong, but not well explained.

If anybody checked new version of guide, please let me know, I think it is bit messed up and is bit difficult to distinguish what you should set up for migration case and what for normal operation case.

Thanks!

Matus

Hibernate and ASE

$

One of our customers recently contacted us with questions on hibernate and ASE. Not much information is out there to provide the kind of details the customer was seeking. I thought it was a good topic to post on SCN. A disclaimer is in order. The document is provided for the information purposes only. This may not be viewed as any kind of guarantee or certification of Hibernate on ASE.

Briefly, Hibernare is an object to relational mapping middle tier that makes the task of writing java applications against standard relational databases much easier. It is a de facto standard in java/J2EE domain. A simple example of how this works is as follows.

If your application is required to save, retrieve, manipulate data of customers from a customer table in a database that has 3 columns - name, city and zipcode, you would typically create a java class called "Customer" with three properties of name, city and zipcode. Methods on that class such as save, get, modify will use standard JDBC API to implement the required functionality. Anyone who has used JDBC to perform these type of actions realizes how tedious this is to use for hundreds of java classes typically required in any project.

Hibernate, an open source technology managed by Red Hat, makes life easier for a java/jdbc developer. It allows developers to focus on implementing business logic while it takes care of creating, excuting sql statements, converting data types between sql and database data types, looping through result sets, caching frequently used data etc. To follow our example,

Hibernate implemention simply requires us to create an xml file that maps java classes to corresponding database tables. If you have a customer.save method, hibernate creates a sql statement like - insert into customer ......

Hibernate has evolved into group of many other related products over the years. http://hibernate.org provides lot of valuable information. An initiative undertaken in former Sybase a few years back, aimed to provide information to the user community about the ASE's compatibility to hibernate. Majority of the compatibility issues were reviewed and resolved then. They are documented here. Because Hiberante is rapidly evolving and the user community has opted Hibernate as a standard, it is imperative that we provide our users with the latest information on the compatibility. Before we get into the steps taken to ensure compatibility it is important to understand how Hibernate provides a consistent experience across databases from different vendors. We know that almost all standard databases mostly implement jdbc api to provide a consistent user experience. But they also seek to distinguish themselves by providing features not supported by others.

Hibernate deals with these inconsitencies through the use of Dialect files. Dialect files are used to list database functions,  db specific data types, reserved words or keywords and unsupported functionality (example - cascade delete not supported by ASE). Each hibernate module comes with a test folder that includes all the tests for that module. ASE engineering team, the one I belong to, has a scheduled jenkins job that runs tests on hibernate-core module every day. The tests run on Hibernate 4.3.5 and ASE 15.7 SP100. We intend to keep running the tests on the latest certified release of hibernate at the time. Red Hat plans to to run similar tests on their infrastructure so as to catch bugs at an early stage. The process of dealing with bugs is as follows.

When a test is found to be failing a JIRA ticket is created. The incidence is investigated and if determined to be a bug in the hibernate code, then one of the top contributors typically work on it. On the other hand if it is simply a test issue like misusing a keyword for table name then any contributor can fix it. If it is determined that the test is for a new functionality in Hibernate that can not be supported by ASE, then the particular test is annotated for skipping during a test cycle. By re-running these tests often and investigating the results we have been able to identify some key settings on ASE that help reduce the number of test

failures. The settings are believed to help not just in testing but in production scenarios also.

The test results and related information of internal jenkins job is accessible through SAP internal wiki.
In addition  wiki page on Hibernate website also provides valuable information. https://community.jboss.org/wiki/HibernateSybaseintegration

Being an open source project, Hibernate provides source code freely to every one through git hub. You can git clone https://github.com/hibernate/hibernate-orm to get the source code. The dialect files I mentioned before are under hibernate-core/src/main/java/org/hibernate/dialect. The tests are run using a gradle wrapper and instructions although somewhat cryptic are available on hibernate website. Please reach out to me if you need more information on how to run the test suite on ASE.
