ASE Sybase ODBC driver distribution question

Hello to all.

I'm developing application that uses ASE Sybase ODBC driver to get metadata from server. My question is could I put ODBC driver libraries into applicaton's package and distibute it as part of this package?

I just don't want to require my users to install ODBC driver apart from application. I guess the answer in "No you could'nt" but maybe there are some conditions that I should meet to make it possible.

Thanks.

Registering an ASE server through Sybase Control Center

When I attempt to register an ASE server (version 15.7/EBF 22232 SMP SP121) through Sybase Control Center (version 3.2.5) after inputting the authentication credentials then clicking ok the cursor turns into a little clock icon and just continues to load indefinitely.

I have checked that I am able to connect to the port (4901) that our ASE server uses by using telnet.

Can anybody help and provide advise on why it won't successfully connect? Is there something I need to do within the ASE server to allow connections from Sybase Control Center?

Any advice on this would be much appreciated!

Sybase with ECC : Delete / Dump Transaction Log

$

0

Hello

I am very new to DBA and have worked in Basis for little while around user Setups. So Please help me resolve this.

Situation

a. I am getting a failure while importing a support pack via SAINT. (cant use SPvM). The logs from SAINT says says I have to dump the transaction log as it is full.

b. I understand from reading the posts that I can use ISQL and run some commands / procedures

c. I am using Sybase with SAP ECC EP6 but I think this is a issue Sybase.

d. DBACOCKPIT does not have any change option. I can see few SQL Tabs, but none of them are active and nothing happens when I click on those tabs

e. I cant find ISQL, I am in Windows 2012 and search for the application gets me nowhere. I have used Sybase, ISQL etc fo search.

f. My Sybase Version is 15.7.0.121 (from System status of SAP)

g. It is a Sandbox / development system so I dont have issues of shutdown etc and the system is totally under our control. However, the person who installed SAP sytem knows the DBA password.

However.

Question: Main question is how I get rid of the transaction log? Is there in any risk. Related to that (as I am new)

a. The question is do I need to download ISQL or Sybase utilities? If yes from where? I cant find it in Service Market place.

b. How do I connect to Sybase. (command please). And any specific drive if I have to run from.

c. How do I get rid of transaction logs.

d. If I change DB password from Windows Server Admin, is that good enough or I "should not be doing it" and try different password at DB itself (it should normally be same as Admin) Also what is the default password for the system users, if any?

I have only a little experience working around native databases much less Sybase that too with SAP.

Any help for  is thanked in advanced.

Sybase ASE memory configuration

Dear All,

I am trying to re-configure ASE memory on our SAP servers, most of the servers has shared memory values set to unlimited.

Current databases were configured with default memory usage, now i am planning to increase current size and configure data cache to use 50 to 55% of the physical memory.

Our production system has 64 GB of memory , if i use half of it for database then it will be 32 GB since kernel parameters are already set to unlimited , shall i increase max memory and then followed by data cache and wash size ? Currently only 16k I/O buffer pool is configured for a smaller size, i would like to configure 128k I/O buffer pool with at least 10 GB.

Is it a good approach to start with ? I am not a Sybase expert , please help me with correct values

Please see current settings below

kernel.shmmax = 9223372036854775807

R3load error on import with declustering

Hi

We are installing CRM 7.0 EHP3 on Windows Sybase 16.00.2 and choosen declustering and depooling option.

During import Abap phase there are errors on DOKTL and EDI40 tables:

(DB) ERROR: DDL statement failed

(DROP INDEX "DOKTL"."DOKTL~0")

DbSlExecute: rc = 103

  (SQL error 3701)

  error message returned by DbSl:

exist in the system catalogs.

(IMP) INFO: a failed DROP attempt is not necessarily a problem

  (SQL error 1581)

  error message returned by DbSl:

[ASE Error SQL1581][SAP][ASE ODBC Driver][Adaptive Server

Enterprise]Create index was aborted because pages in the data only

table are not linked.

(DB) INFO: disconnected from DB

There is a note for this problem:

http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/2039613

but our initial R3Load was 742 PL13 and we upgraded to PL23 without any progress.

However in note is statement about R3Load 742 PL10 without "and above" so maybe only this version is OK (don't have access to PL10 to try ) ?

Opened OSS ticket and waiting .....

Does an higher reuse count value from sp_monitorconfig indicates to increase its present value even though countmetadata doesnot?

Dear Experts,

reuse count value for "number of open objects" is higher, which indicates to increase the parameter value.

But "sp_countmetadata" says the server already have more than required (150000 configured)

Does the server need our intervention here?

Also, any comment on "permission cache entries" from the below output will be highly appreciated.

1> sp_countmetadata "open objects"

2> go

There are 98743 user objects in all database(s), requiring 325538 Kbytes of memory. The 'open objects' configuration parameter is currently set to 150000

Hi All,

I had installed ECC 6.0 Ehp7 with Sybase 15.7 on Windows 2008 R2.

But while installing it has taken only 4GB RAM for sybase database.

Now system is running very slow so want to increase RAM size of sybase up to 10 GB.

How to increase RAM and is there any another parameters needs to be change along with RAM size.

Please suggest me how to increase..

Thanks in Advance.

Recovering SAP ASE for custom SAP Applications

I am involved currently in a project involving setting up standardized recovery procedure for several SAP applications (Windows & Unix).  I have come across a couple of inconsistencies in SAP documentation which I think should be clarified in order to avoid missing up with recovery procedure.

[a]  On the one hand Database Administration Guide - version 1.4 2014-07-16 for SAP Business Suite on SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (6.1 Ensuring Recoverability for the SAP ASE Server, p. 90) states:

"Create a file system backup for the file system /sybase/<DBSID> (Unix) and <Drive>:\sybase\<DBSID> (Windows) at regular intervals. The database does not have to be offline for this. Exclude the following database devices from the backup:

/sybase/<DBSID>/sybsystem

/sybase/<DBSID>/sapdiag

/sybase/<DBSID>/sapdata_<n>

/sybase/<DBSID>/saplog_<n>"

On  the other hand, SAP note 1618817 - SYB How to restore a Sybase ASE database server (UNIX) or 1611715 - SYB How to restore a Sybase ASE database server (Windows) say:

"Recreate the file systems as required for the following directories:

/sybase/<SID>/sapdata_[1-n]

/sybase/<SID>/saplog_[1-n] (*)

/sybase/<SID>/sybsystem

/sybase/<SID>/sapdiag

/sybase/<SID>/sybtemp

/sybase/<SID>/saptemp

Remark: If the file system(s) /sybase/<SID>/saplog_[1-n] have not been corrupted, the devices files will probably hold transactional data that has not yet been dumped to a transaction log dump. Perform an emergency dump of the transaction log in this case (see below). Make sure you retain a good offline copy of the device files before you recreate the file systems /sybase/<SID>/saplog_[1-n] "

If one follows the BACKUP recommendation guide documented by SAP in Database Administration Guide, /sybase/<SID>/saplog_[1-n] will not be available to recover anything from saplog_xxx since that file system was not backed up in the first place so upon recovering FILESYSTEM the files will not be there at all.

[b]  On the one hand 1618817/1611715 note require to [1] restore File System (which contains everything except system and user databases).  [2] recreate ASE using resource files.  On the other hand sap installation using SWPM does not leave resource files present after it cleans up.  If you follow the installation log you may see the following:

sapinst.log:Creating file /tmp/sapinst_instdir/NW740SR1/SYB/INSTALL/STANDALONE/STD/PICP/sqlsrv.res.

...

sapinst.log:Removed file /tmp/sapinst_instdir/NW740SR1/SYB/INSTALL/STANDALONE/STD/PICP/sqlsrv.res.

sapinst.log:Creating file /tmp/sapinst_instdir/NW740SR1/SYB/INSTALL/STANDALONE/STD/PICP/sqlsrv_lang.res.

...

sapinst.log:Removed file /tmp/sapinst_instdir/NW740SR1/SYB/INSTALL/STANDALONE/STD/PICP/sqlsrv_lang.res.

Both files are created and removed by the installation - they never leave /tmp.

Excluding /sybase/<DBSID>/sybsystem is also pretty murky thing to ask.  /sybase/<DBSID>/sybsystem contains system devices for master, sybprocs, sybmgmtdb & sybsystemdb.  They are pretty small.  Why excluding them from the file system backup at all?  I think it might have been wiser to back them up as well in the general FS backup procedure, restore them on the file system level and then start up ASE normally - rather than recreating ASE from scratch using the missing resource files.  If the master database is corrupt ASE will not start.  In this case you will have to recreate ASE from scratch using resource files. If ASE does start up normally - if the hard copy of master database is more recent than the file system image - follow the load master procedure (always an uneasy one).  If the hard copy is out of date - skip loading master database altogether and load only user databases.   Recreating ASE from resource file, in addition, will require setting back all the customized ASE setting which were not included in the backup procedure and are not specified in the SAP note.   I think it would be a good practice to save a hard copy of the last ASE configuration file as well - or at least to copy the one restored by file system recovery BEFORE ASE server has been recreated by srvbuild (which will overwrite the configuration file)..

[c]  Recovering sapdiag databases too may be simplified.  Instead of dropping DB + DEVICES straight away, check if the hard copy of the DB is in sync with the DB structure (done easily using combination of sp_helpdb and load database with headeronly) and just load the database.  Recovering user databases may be done in the same manner, unless sapdata_xxx and saplog_xxx were not backed up (after the confusing documentation in [a] has been cleaned up).

Can anyone from SAP ASE team clarify on this and make documentation more straightforward?

Thanks,

Andrew

I get the message "You cannot load this dump because it contains functionality that is available only on the server on which it was dumped."

I get this message while loading db  even after setting sp_dboption 'deallocate first text page' to false and  dumped .

I am in the processe of resyncing warm standby replication.

How do I load this database. I need a solution to this ASAP please treat this as urgent
