clone of host - still accessing original system? (change ip?)

Hi experts,

we have a linux host with sybase ASE.

We made now one clone of the host getting a new IP address.

However, if I start the DB on the clone host, it access the DB of the original system.

It seems, like it access the DB of the original IP.

Where is that coming from?

Does anybody know how to change that?

Maximum DB size for SAP on ASE?

$

Hello ASE experts,

If I'm not wrong, a ASE database can be up to 32TB when a pagesize of 16KB is used - which is the case for the SAP BusinessSuite.

Nevertheless, this seems to be a pretty hard limit, which does not exist for the other available databases like Oracle or SQL Server.

Am I correct? Any other comments?

Thanks,

Uli

Limit DB-Access (Which Server is allowed to access DB?)

$

Hi experts,

we faced the following issue ( I also opened another thread which is already solved).

We did clone a host on Linux/ASE.

By starting the db on the clone we figured out, that the DB was access on the original host.

(problem was solved by changing interfaces file).

But my question is now, is there no security-configuration which avoids, that each server can access the DB of each server?

Thats a big security-leak, as so each sever is able to access the DB.

Sybase reclaiming space

$

Hi guys and girls,

With this query coming up a lot and my recent experience in this I have decided to write this blog post. I would like for any improvement comments by all the SAP employees in this space area who are also a great support to everyone running sybase. And to all my peers.

SAP Official Stance (According to my knowledge)

The supported way to reduce the size of a device would be to dump all the databases that have allocations on that device, then drop all those databases, then drop the device (sp_dropdevice from the ASE side and, if using file system devices, an RM or DEL on the file from the OS side), then DISK INIT a new device of the desired (smaller) size, then CREATE DATABASE FOR LOAD for all the dropped databases, then LOAD DATABASE from the dump files for all the dropped databases

Scenario

A finger fault caused me to add 18GB to a device instead of 1GB i.e. to grow from 17GB to 18 GB.

Prerequisites for fix

1. Other devices should have free space to accomadate used space in use by your erroneous device

2. Offtime to run alter database off command (database needs to be in single user mode)

3. Shrink database is supported for 1943890 - SYB: Release information for SAP Sybase ASE 15.7.0.110 and higher.

Solution

1. First check space usage on all your devices use sp_helpdevice device name i.e. sp_helpdevice SID_data_005 there should be free space on all device equivelant to space on device you want to reclaim/drop. Other option is DBACOCKPIT to check for freespace example below:

DBACockpit.jpg

2. Once you determined there is enough space, you need to STOP SAP, leave database running. And switch to single user mode you have to switch to master database and to single user mode

use master

go

sp_dboption SID, 'single user',true

go

3, If there are users still on the system run sp_who to see which user it is and kill the session number. In below example user sapsa i.e. sap is logged onto session 87 so you will run kill 87

KIll.JPG

4. Once you are in single user mode you have to take database fragments of device i.e. reallocate it to other devices. To do this you will run command as follows remember this requires SAP downtime so do it in small increments of maybe 2gb to 3gb as this does run for hours. Remember to use DB name SID and target device name this case SID_data_005. Always specify a unit specified i.e. M(Megabyte) or G(Gigabyte)

SID.JPG

5. Once this has completed check your device has no allocated fragments left so FREE space should match total space as per below example.

space.JPG

6.Now that the device space is free on this device you have to drop the device from the database.

SID.JPG

7. As per above example you can see the device is dropped but the device file exists on OS still and needs to be deleted to free up the space. Current free space is 26.3GB

D.JPG

Device size on disk below.

data.JPG

8. Once device is deleted as per below you can see the free space has now increased from 26.3GB to 68.3GB

data.JPG

9. Now you need to recreate device with exact same details as per before but with initial size that you need in my case 10GB.

disk init name='SID_data_005',physname='D:\sybase\SID\sapdata_5\SID_data_005.dat',size='10G'

space.JPG

10. Now the device is created but you still need to allocate database space to device to have it to be usable and to allocate database fragments to the device

space1.JPG

space.JPG

11. Now that the device space has been recreated, and allocated you can check the free space of the Data drive has increased from 26.3GB initially to 58.3GB which matches the 30GB if space size decrease in device SID_data_005

Unable to Schedule auto backups in DBACOCKPIT

Hi Experts,

Please help,

I had a situation like I have lost all the passwords SA, SAPSA, SAPSSO so I was forced to regenerate to SA password to get into database. I have followed a procedure 1872806. Got the password for SA with that I have changed the SAPSA and SAPSSO passwords.

+++SYBADM shows the connection was successfully established. But we are failing to trigger auto backups.

Also the scheduled calender jobs are failing after the password resets. More over SA is locked.

At OS level I am getting a message worker jsj__RunSQLJob:jsd_MakeConnection() failed for user sapsa to server SID

Please help on this situation.

Hello,

I installed yesterday a SAP Solution Manager in Windows Server 2012 (R2) with SAP Sybase ASE database version 16.0.

I´m newest in SAP Sybase ASE database and I don´t know how to do the administration tasks in this type of database!

I made the download of DBA Guide - SAP BS on SAP Sybase AS Enterprise guide but I don´t see any explanation about isql and which isql commands exist and how to I use them... and everything else! I can not even do the basics, for example I don´t know how to start and stop the sybase database with the isql application... even how to log in on sybase... I don´t know anything about it!

Other question is also about the SAP Sybase ASE database administration... is there anygraphicalsoftwareenvironmentthat allowsthe administrationof the same like for example the SQL Server Management Studio in MS SQL Server database) and the Oracle Enterprise Administration in Oracle DB environment...!?

Can you help me please?

Thank you,

Poor performance in productive system

Hi experts.

At november 2014 we have migrate our platform from iSeries/DB2_400 to Wintel/ASE. The new server has 16 CPU, 64 GB RAM and flash disk.

The first months the performance of the system was fantastic, but since the 3th or 4th month it slow down more and more until now, when the performance is very very poor.

We have check lots of parameters, update ASE and kernel to the last version (kernel 7.02 SP500, ASE 15.7.0.133) but the problem persists. The only thing we can see at the dbacockpit is that from time to time there is a very poor performance at the I/O devices. Attached I send you an screenshot about that times. Can anybody sujects what can be the problem?.

DUMP TRANSACTION is not possible on database

Hi All,

I'm trying to take a transaction log dump using DBACockpit but the job I scheduled finished with error. In the Program Log, I found the following lines:

"starting job execution at 2015-05-19 08:30:24

(1 row affected)

Error: DUMP TRANSACTION is not possible on database."

Would you please suggest some possible causes for this error and the solution for them? I'm new to ASE so I don't know how to troubleshoot the error, I was able to take the backup of database successfully with DBACockpit. Our system has ASE version is 15.7.0.132 and ECC 6.0 EHP7.

I would be very grateful for any contribution to solve this issue.

Best regards,

Duy

How dump database cumulative works?

Hi,

I have some doubts about how the dump database cumulative command works,

I guess that the changes perfomed after a dump database full are registered ( not in the syslogs table) and when you send a dump database cumulative ase backup those changes.

I want to know if I can use this command in a database that has the options "trunc log on chkpt" and "select into/bulkcopy/pllsort" set?
