Hi Experts,

We need to modify the history retention in the DBA Cockpit for database growth. Could you specify which Data Collector is responsible for this data?

DBSQL_SQL_ERROR dumps in the system

$

0

Hi,

We've been frequently receiving the below dumps in our production system from last 2-3 days and users are not able to perform any task and we're near to downtime,

Category               Installation Errors

Runtime Errors         DBSQL_SQL_ERROR

Except.                CX_SY_OPEN_SQL_DB

Date and Time          10.04.2016 10:19:23

Short Text

SQL error "SQL code: 2843" occurred while accessing table "VBERROR".

What happened?

Database error text: "SQL message: [ASE Error SQL2843][SAP][ASE ODBC

Driver][Adaptive Server Enterprise]The dynamic statement 'J4' could not be

found. This may be due to insufficient metadata descriptors. Increase the

serverwide 'number of open objects' parameter or the 'procedure cache size' parameter."

Our production landscape environment is as below,

  - SAP ERP 6.0 EHP7 (Kernel 7.42 PL300)

  - SAP ASE 15.7 SP132

  - Windows Server 2012 R2

  - 2 nodes in Microsoft Failover Clustering with additional 2 application servers

Surprisingly we haven't received this error (not even once) in any of the other systems (Sandbox, Development, Quality, Training & Pre-production) in the landscape. All are on the same packages level and kernel version.

We've raised a support ticket with SAP and first thing they asked was to increase the "open objects" parameter by 30% (previously 60000) and send the sp_monitorconfig 'all' output and sybdiag zip file.

We did it and the next thing they asked was to increase the "open partitions" parameter to 80000 (previously 50000).

We did that also but the issue is not resolved yet. SAP again asked for sp_monitorconfig output and we've send it and waiting for response...

I am not an expert in ASE but from the below output of sp_monitorconfig 'all', one could easily make out that the "max memory", "open indexes" and "procedure cache" is hitting 100% percent.

Does it has to do anything with the issue?

P.S.: No parameters were changed except for "open objects", "open partitions", "max memory" and "heap memory per user". Also I've complied with the SAP note 1749935 - SYB: Configuration Guide for SAP ASE 15.7 and executed SAP Configuration Check from DBA Cockpit and couldn't find anything amiss.

Installing Standby Database

$

Hello,

after switching from Oracle to Sybase two years ago (customer wish) I had to set up some standby databases, that works and the these standby dbs running fine, until a few days ago. One standby stops working during applying some transaction logs. Normally I would load the latest backup of the <SID> db and start applying again from that point, but the database service (Win2k8 R2 SP1) stops working. The service stays in starting mode, the log file doesn't log an error!

I didn't found a way to get the service running again, so I decided to reinstall the whole standby system.

Newest SWPM, uninstall > install (what's new, SWPM added new sybase users even they exists in AD (productiv side) (I had to change the user on the PRD system, because the internal windows id was changed)

So, Sybase service is running fine again and the SAP system was up.

Next step was, to reload the master db with the newest backup, start single user modus and loaded master db successfully.

After that, I started Sybase via service and logged on, and get the following error message:

Msg 921, Level 14, State 1:
Server 'SID':
Database 'saptools' has not been recovered yet - please wait and try again.
Msg 4001, Level 11, State 1:
Server 'SID':
Cannot open default database 'saptools'.

In the SID.log I get the following error messages: (just the main part)

I didn't see an error like this before and I don't know how the "sybsystemprocs" db get marked as "suspect".

I retried to load the master db, that works, but if I try to load saptools, nothing happened. After "go", no error no other information.

Any idea how to get back to a "working" Sybase database?

Thank you!

i installed and configured Solution manager 7.1 SP10 on Sybase 15.7 which i updated to the last release SP110. th e OS is windows server 2008.

I already implemented the last version of the note 1558958 and 1946750.

When i launch the DBACockpit, a message is displayed for few seconds  "SID   Repair data collection" then it disappears.

In the performance dashboard no errors are displayed:

but in the Diagnostics --> self monitoring :

all the data collectors are duplicated, the first set is in error status and the second is in a green status:

Even in the "managed system configuartion " setep 8 i got the error for the "Database extractor Setup":

Even after i repair all the data collectors i the repair tpool i gor the same errors.

Thank you for your help

Hello friends,

During system copy from oracle > ASE, we got below errors for some  of packages. I just repeated them and they worked next time (It looked to me something similar to temp tablespace of oracle db)

Can you please help me to understand why this came and what should i increase(any database ? parameter ?) to avoid this in next migrations ?

Getting Started with SAP Applications Using SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise

The aim of this document is to help you get started with the SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise database that is run with SAP applications.

Best Practices for Migration and Runtime

This document describes best practices that are specific to the migration and operation of SAP NetWeaver-based products on SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP ASE). In addition, this guide provides best practices for SAP Business Warehouse and other SAP applications based on SAP BW, like SCM/APO, SEM, and the SAP Solution Manager.

New Documents on High Availability

There is an updated version of the HADR Users Guide available. The guide is valid for the SAP Replication Server in general, but also for running SAP Business Suite on SAP ASE in an SAP Replication Server environment.

The following document focuses on installing a disaster recovery solution in two data centers with an SAP system in each data center:

HADR Installation in a Nutshell - Part II

Everybody using SAP Replication Server with SAP ASE and SAP Business Suite should have a look at the following document:

Rolling Database Update in an SAP ASE and SAP Replication Server Environment

Compression Advisor for SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise

With SAP ASE 15.7, advanced compression capabilities have been introduced that allow large data volumes to be stored more compactly, thus reducing I/O times. In addition, SAP ASE 16.0 provides an index compression feature which further reduces the overall database size. However, compressing existing databases requires resources and time to rebuild the indexes. This can become a challenge for multi-terabyte databases or environments with extremely high load and limited maintenance windows.

Configuring Automatic Database Space Expansion in SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise

This white paper introduces system administrators to the automatic database expansion feature in SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise. The author will focus on deployments of SAP Business Suite applications running on SAP ASE. With automatic database expansion activated, administrators can further reduce the time needed for administration tasks. More importantly, interruptions to business users can be avoided because the database server can automatically obtain the space resources needed for continuous operation.

Important Information

An issue has been identified that can potentially cause incorrect results in an SAP Business Warehouse system running on SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise. The problem has been observed whenever the optimization goal 'allrows_dss' or another optimization goal that includes optcriteria 'advanced_aggregation' is used for an SQL statement. This is typically the case for SAP BW systems. SAP ERP systems running on ASE are not affected. In SAP ERP systems, optimization goal 'allrows_mix' has been configured.

Details and corrections are available in SAP Note 2026328 - SYB: Incorrect results with SUM aggregation on decimal fields. We strongly recommend to implement the corrections in SAP BW as soon as possible.

On the Road to an Enterprise Cloud

Customer demands for support of virtualization are rapidly growing. SAP offers support for running its applications in virtualized cloud environments. You can start your projects and can bring the innovations from SAP into production in a matter of weeks instead of months, with complete flexibility of deployment choice. Landscape Virtualization Management (LVM) is available for SAP Business Suite on SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise.

DBA Cockpit: Automatic Table Maintenance for SAP ASE

Maintaining tables, indexes and data partitions is crucial for productive database systems. Continuous insertion, update and deletion of data induces fragmentation, bad cluster ratios and inaccurate optimizer statistics. The article shows how the DBA Cockpit and its automatic table maintenance for SAP ASE ensures good cluster ratios on tables and indexes, frees up unused space and ensures accurate optimizer statistics.

General Availability of SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise

SAP Business Suite on ASE is available for SAP Business Suite 7i2010, 7i2011, 7i2013 and 7i2016. For more information, refer to SAP Note 1554717.

Client configuration for Setting net password encryption reqd

I am trying to enforce all connections to the Database Server, however we have  a few different type of clients connecting using several applications. I am currently gathering all the applications and settings required to be able to connect to the server successfully

ISQL and BCP

add -X switch

ASE ADO.NET Data Provider

Data Source=myASEserver;Port=5000;Database=myDataBase;Uid=myUsername; Pwd=myPassword;EncryptPassword=1;

Open Client

cat ocs.cfg

[DEFAULT]section

CS_SEC_ENCRYPTION = CS_TRUE

CS_SEC_EXTENDED_ENCRYPTION = CS_TRUE

Will Perl, Python use the same ocs.cfg file or is there another way to set the connection to allow encryption?

Others Apps

DBArtisan

On the Security Tab check option 'Enable net password encryption'

I have not found ways to set Sybase Central and Toad For Sybase

Has anyone been able to get these applications connected with 'net password encryption reqd' set to1 ?

Hi community,

I'm starting reading/reading again some chapters of 'ASE 15.7 Performance and Tuning Series: Query Processing and Abstract Plans'.

I think I get the 'big picture' of the need of the optimizer but I'm looking for way to better understand it and the information it needs to provide the best plan to the execution engine.

Is there any document/presentation that will present a kind of 'hands-on understanding the optimizer'?

For example, I get a rough image when I read this

"

The query optimizer processes join predicates the same way it processes search

arguments, in that it uses statistics, number of rows in the table, index heights,

and the cluster ratios for the index and data pages to determine which index and

join method provides the cheapest access. In addition, the query optimizer also

uses join density estimates derived from join histograms that give accurate

estimates of qualifying joining rows and the rows to be scanned in the outer and

inner tables. The query optimizer also must decide on the optimal join ordering

that will yield the most efficient query plan. The next sections describe the key

techniques used in processing joins.

"

Those words would be meaningfull to me if I can see in practice how the output of 'optdiag statistics' helps the optimizer choosing the right plan, how some dbcc traceon(traceflags) can help me understanding the optimizer work.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Simon
