Hello Experts,

i am rebuilding my crashed SAP system with same SID based on Sybase ASE DB.

The method opted by me for this is System copy---> Backup/Restore ---->Load dump manually when prompted by SWPM.i am

while loading the dump i am getting error as

"""Data on dump will not fit into current database. Need 151984 Mbyte database."""

Current devices are as follows

---------------------------------------------

ECD_data_001

         E:\sybase\ECD\sapdata_1\ECD_data_001.dat

         158720.00 MB, Free: 0.00 MB

ECD_log_001

         E:\sybase\ECD\saplog_1\ECD_log_001.dat

         15360.00 MB, Free: 0.00 MB

master

         E:\sybase\ECD\sybsystem\master.dat

file system device, special, dsync on, directio off, default disk, physical disk,

400.00 MB, Free: 80.00 MB

I have tried by dropping database and recreated data_device for load....with 200GB(error is for 151984M---151GB) still getting the error.

Please advise.

Hi all,

We installed ASE 15.7 on RHEL 6.7 with Hugepages support on a server with 256GB memory.

ASE started fine with max memory of 120GB and logs indicate using Hugepages.

1) When ASE uses /dev/shm ?

2) Is it good to put tempdb devices on /dev/shm ?

Sybase minor upgrade - service pack part1

There has been a lot of topic discussion around this, I was hoping this may clear things up for some of just provide insight to others. I extend invites to all to critique this this document for improvement to the benefit of others, as I am now in an oracle environment it would be difficult for me to make improvements on this lacking access to the necessary if this could help one person it would make me happy

Sybase minor upgrade

This document describes the upgrade steps for Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) database.

You want to install a new software release of SAP ASE in the SAP Business Suite Environment. If you upgrade from ASE 15.7 to ASE 16.0 this is considered a major upgrade.

If you upgrade from ASE 15.7 SP110 to ASE 15.7 SP122  as example this is considered a minor upgrade.

Please note section  Continuing with minor upgrade note 1607816 - SYB: Installing Service Packs for SAP ASE (Windows) can only be used for minor upgrades. That means do not use this section to upgrade from SAP ASE 15.7 (any SP level) to SAP ASE 16.0 or higher.

I have combined the preparations from note 1607816 SYB: Installing Service Packs for SAP ASE (Windows) and note 2162735 - SYB Performing a major ASE upgrade (Windows). So these preparatory steps should accommodate both upgrades, I was extra careful so some of my steps may seem redundant to you.

This upgrade was performed on Microsoft Windows 2012 R2.

Section 1 Prerequisites

Go to C:\Program Files\SAP\hostctrl\work access the file dev_saphostexec to check the version it should be a minimum of 7.21 SP03 or higher.

hostagent.png

Go to https://support.sap.com/swdc In the navigation bar, choose SAP Software Download Center -> Support Packages and Patches -> Browse our Download Catalog -> SAP Technology Components -> SAP HOST AGENT -> SAP HOST AGENT 7.21 -> <your operating system> -> Choose the latest we are choosing SAP Host Agent 7.21 SP06

downloadloc.png

Be logged on as <SID>ADM Create a temporary directory (e.g. /tmp/ha), and copy the package SAPHOSTAGENT<PatchNr>.SAR to this directory.

sarfile.png

Extract the binary in this directory

extract.png

Once extracted run command saphostexec – upgrade

upgradeexec.png

upgradestatus.png

You will see the upgrade runs very quickly.

Go to C:\Program Files\SAP\hostctrl\work access the file dev_saphostexec to check the new version it should be 7.21 SP06

Command saphostexec –version should also work

hostexecnew.png

Download the software from the SAP service marketplace https://support.sap.com/software.html click on Databases->SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise->Database Patches->SAP ASE for Business Suite->Now download both the SAP ASE 16 DBCLIENT BUS.SUITE and SAP ASE 16.0 FOR BUS. SUITE

download1.png

download2.png

Click On Windows on x86_64 which is our windows and technology format Download the SAP ASE 16.0 FOR BUS. SUITE DBCLIENT SP01 PL02

dbclient.png

Now to download the DB patch Click On Windows on x86_64 which is our windows and technology format Download the SAP ASE 16.0 FOR BUS. SUITE Patch PL02 for ASEBS160 SP01

patch.png

These are what the downloaded patch files look like

downloaded.png

Log on as SYB<SID> user create the directory droplocation on <drive>:\droplocation copy the ASEBS16001P_2.SAR file and extract with CMD in elevated administration mode, otherwise you will get permission denied error.

extract.png

extract2.png

Log on as <sid>adm stop sap and stop Sybase services disable the two Sybase services and sap services as well. At this point ask network administrator to do a checkpoint backup of the VM if not a physical server.

services.PNG

Perform a file system backup for the software installation directory $Sybase\<SID> also perform a backup image of the VM if not a physical server. Create a folder called robologs in C:\ drive.

robocopy X:\tobebackedup\  E:\backuplocation\ /S /SEC /R:1 /W:1 /V /LOG:c:\robologs\robolog-logfilename.txt

Command syntax below <source folder> <backup folder> make sure Sybase and SAP is stopped completely by disabling the services after stopped. Wait for the checkpoint of the VM to be completed by network administrator. If full checkpoint is done ,backup of FS is redundant.

robocopybackup.PNG

Once the VM has been handed back after checkpoint VM backup is completed (if not a physical server), logon as user SYB<ADM> and enable services so you can do the following section for backups. This is for backups to disk

Still as user SYB<SID> run sp_helpdb note down the name of all the databases on your server and make a backup of all of these databases usually would be a list like this <SID,master, model, saptempdb, saptools, sybmgmtdb, sybsystemdb, sybsystemprocs, sybsecurity

,tempdb) the sybsecurity does not always exist.

It is mandatory to perform a full database backup of all databases in the ASE server before the SAP system is restarted!!

listdb.PNG

dblist.PNG

saptools.PNG

  dbs.PNG

Command: dump database tempdb to "D:\Backup\upgrade\tempdb.dmp" with compression = 2

go

backup.PNG\

Verify the backups are created successfully as per above It should be 100% make the name of the dump file the same as the name of the database being backed up for clarity purposes.

backups.PNG

Check the configuration for sp_config_dump

spconfig.PNG

Search database for where thresholds are installed to confirm where they are installed run the query from the master database in this example thresholds are only installed for SID database:

use master

go

select name

from master..sysdatabases

where object_id(name+’..sp_thresholdaction_logfreespace’) is not NULL

order by name

go

cdconfigenabled.PNG

Now check the thresholds for the SID database as per screenshot above, note down the logsegment page values and script name.

thresholdsSIDB.PNG

Now that you have done all the backups , as user SYB<SID> logon to isql64 as the sapsso (System Security Officer) user and unlock sa user it should state Account Unlocked

sapsso.PNG

Stop job scheduler and disable it , Login to ASE with ASE login for sap user sapsa and execute the following commands:

exec sp_configure 'enable job scheduler',0

exec sybmgmtdb..sp_sjobcontrol '','stop_js'

disablejob.PNG

As user <sid>adm Perform a backup of the <drive>:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\global\syb\NTAMD64\ using robocopy. This folder contains the ODBC and JDBC drivers if installed. Run CMD in elevate administration mode also create directory robologs in C: drive if it does not exist.

driverbackup.PNG

Verify the log file as well afterwards. Check for any errors or omissions.

logscheck.PNG

If you are going to perform a major upgrade from ASE 15.7 to SAP 16.0 take screenshots of your ENV variables for SybaseSYBASE_ASE, SYBASE_OCS, SYBASE_WS, INCLUDE, LIB, PATH.Note that the exact value of variables INCLUDE, LIB and PATH depend on your system. This is just in case you may need to restore. Where screenshot cuts off save the value to a text file for later reference.

envvarPNG.PNG

sybclosewait.PNG

For major upgrades you need to additionally on virtualised systems to set environment variable 'SYBCLOSEWAIT' to some value greater 10, before starting the upgrade. See SAP KBA 2116143

Continuing with minor upgrade check the database version before the update logon as  syb<sid> user. Open administrator cmd shell from directory D:\sybase\SID\ASE-16_0\bin and type sqlsrvr.exe –sbssav  and after sqlsrvr.exe –version make a note of the current version for later comparison

version.PNG

version2.PNG

Log on as SID<ADM> user stop the SAP system and the ASE Server using the management console. Disable the Sybase BCKServer_<SID>_BS and Sybase SQLServer_<SID> services. Also make sure that no process isql, sqlsrver.exe or bcksrvr.exe are running in task manager reboot the host as well.

services.PNG

Log on as SYB<SID> user , download the file dbsrvresp_update_win.txt from note 1607816 and copy it to the temporary location d:\droplocation where you extracted the patch file earlier. Open cmd in administration (elevated mode) Run the command syntax setupConsole.exe -f <TMPDRIVE>:\<PATH_TO_TMPDIR>\dbsrvresp_update.txt -i silent -DUSER_INSTALL_DIR=<SYBDRIVE>:\sybase\<DBSID> -DAGREE_TO_SAP_LICENSE=true

Replace DBSID with your SAP System ID, and replace Sybdrive with the drive where you ASE software is installed. Replace <TMPDRIVE> and <PATH_TO_TEMPDIR> as relevant

This is the longest phase and usually took me 10 - 15 minutes.

install.PNG

When the install process has finished check the ASEsuite.log which is located in %SYBASE%\log or in this case D:\sybase\<DBSID>\log and check for errors.

logs.PNG

aselog.PNG

Perform the post upgrade tasks as user syb<sid> enable the services for Sybase Sybase BCKServer _<DBSID>_BS and Sybase SQLServer _<DBSID> only and not SAP.  Sybase SQLServer _<DBSID> service takes a long time to start after update, do not panic check the DBSID.log in my example it is updating statistics below. Can take up to 10  minutes maybe more to startup initially.

services.PNG

duringupgrade.PNG

Check the database <SID>.log for errors of Job Scheduler as per the note, if you do see the below error you can ignore the error at this point.

scheduler.PNG

Logon with user syb<sid>, Unlock user sa again by logging on as sapsso user. The user sa is locked by the installation script dbsrvresp_update_win.txt.

unlocksa.PNG

Execute the Sybase installation scripts  located in the directory D:\sybase\<DBSID>\ASE-16_0\scripts execute with command syntax Isql64  -Usa -S<SID> -X  -iinstmstr -o<output file> Always specify full path to input file (script) and output file (log file). Check the output log file for errors afterwards in detail.

sid.PNG

Example of text command of instmaster.

isql64 -X -Usa -SSID -i D:\sybase\SID\ASE-16_0\scripts\instmstr -o D:\droplocation\instmstrlog.txt

Repeat these steps for the following scripts:

Instcomm, instmodl, instmsgs. ebf,installjsdb, installdbextend

instsecu (necessary only if database sybsecurity has been setup)

installdbccdb (optional, necessary only if you configured the dbcc database

sybupd.PNG

Execute the script syb_update_db.TXT which is attached to this SAP note. Copy the script to a temporary directory (e.g. the temporary directory to which you copied the Sybase software package). Change to that directory and execute the script:

$>isql -X -Usa -S<SID> -e -i syb_update_db.TXT -o sybupd_out.txt

Take note command syntax changes here

Restart the job scheduler. Log in to ASE with isql with the account sapsa and execute the

command:

sp_configure "enable job scheduler", 1

exec sybmgmtdb..sp_sjobcontrol '' , 'start_js'

jobsched.PNG

Run the following command in the directory where you previously implemented this script , note you must use SA user and therefore it needs to be still unlocked. Substitute SID with your SID:

isql -SSID -Usa -DSID -X -e -i sp_thresholdaction_logfreespace.sql

threshold.PNG

Lock user "sa" again. Log in to ASE with isql with the account sapsso and execute the command as per below.

lock.PNG

As user SYB<SID> stop Sybase and disable services again

disable.PNG

Remove the newly installed sample client library applications according to SAP Note 1598817 (optional). Ensure that all physical devices created by the process have only write permission for the operating system user who installs, configures and runs SAP ASE. In a standard installation, that is the user 'syb<sid>' for /sybase/<DBSID>. On a Windows system, the file permission inheritance is already set up and the Adaptive Server services are running as the syb<sid> operating system user. As you can see the inheritance is running to Sybase subfolders and the services are running as per below image.

sidsid.PNG

The Adaptive Server update includes folders containing sample client library applications.  Note: These sample programs are included for training purposes only and are not intended to be installed in a production environment.

!!!Be very careful not to delete any parent folders!!!

$SYBASE/OCS-16_0/sample

$SYBASE/DataAccess/ODBC/samples

$SYBASE/jConnect-7_0/sample2

$SYBASE/jConnect-7_0/classes/sample2

$SYBASE/ASE-16_0/sample

$SYBASE/WS-16_0/samples

sid3.PNG

In our case here is nothing to delete as you can see above!

Log in as <sid>adm user. Copy the suitable <DBCLNT>.SAR file to the directory <drive>:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\global\syb\NTAMD64\. Copy the downloaded ASEBC1600001_2-20012478.SAR to the directory E:\usr\sap\SID\SYS\global\syb\NTAMD64 and extract it

jdbc.PNG

jdbc.PNG

Update the JDBC driver and reconfigure your Java stack to use this JDBC driver with the changed name, see SAP Note 867976.(This is for dual stack or Java only systems)

mmc.PNG

Log in as user<sid>adm and re-enable the services for Sybase and SAP and start the SAP system through the SAP Management Console.

Now check the version of the database after the upgrade as per above

sidnewver.PNG

Now after system is started access tcode DBACOCKPIT specify the password of user sapsa and select the option Use the standard connect user and do not ask again and click on logon.

cockpit.PNG

Open DBACOCKPIT -> Click on Database <SID> -> Configuration -> Data Collection Framework -> Collector Configuration (check for any yellow or red collectors and repair them as required)

dbacockpitcollector.PNG

siddba.PNG

As per this example click on repair.

correctedcollector.PNG

Now you can see it is displaying correctly. Always start with the Framework collector first.

Now you will have to check that your installed threshold script still exist by running below query in iqsl and switching to the master database. As you can see your threshold script is still installed in SID database.

sidfree.PNG

Now you must check that your set thresholds are still active for the script. Switch to your <DBSID> should be the one identified by query above. Then run the command as per above. As you can see from above I had only installed the one threshold and the last chance threshold values with the script sp_thresholdaction_logfreespace. This configuration should still be intact.

threshold.PNG

Now switch to master database again and verify that you dump configuration still exists. As you can see the dump configuration is still existing and configuration is correct as per what I set it up. This configuration should still be intact.

Dear Expert,

We are using Sybase Database 15.7.0.012 with OS AIX, as i new to Sybase please guide how to take backup of Sybase Database.

As per note 158831 we tried but get below error

1> sp_config_dump @config_name='ECDDB',

2> @stripe_dir = '/inst/backup' ,

3> @compression = '101' ,

4> @verify = 'header'

5> go

Msg 2812, Level 16, State 5:

Server 'ECD', Line 1:

Stored procedure 'sp_config_dump' not found. Specify owner.objectname or use

sp_help to check whether the object exists (sp_help may produce lots of

output).

Also we want to take backup on Tape Drive instead of Harddisk & schedule backup in DB13, kindly suggest procedure.

Thanks & Regards,

Abhijit

Sybase ASE : Several "SAP" databases in one instance on one host

Hello,

I've been searching the forums and the SAP notes in order to know if I could install several databases in only one SYBASE ASE instance.

The only thing I could find was this SAP note :

1811976 - SYB Multiple ASE instances on the same host

But in this case I'm installing several instances of Sybase DB and this is not what I want to do.

On a technical standpoint, I thinl this should be possible, in the same way we can do it on SQLServer.

Is this possible with ASE ?

Thanks and BR,

Steve.

sp_sysmon advice needed

Hi guys,

Looking at attached sp_sysmon.out

I am wondering about the following recommendations and things.

1. I see the in the section Skipped Tasks By Engine that a fair percentage of tasks are skipped am I misunderstanding this or is this an issue?

2. Also in the section Allotted Slices Exhausted the medium priority is 100% exhausted what should be done here?

3. I see there are 4 engines, the system is running VM on windows and msinfo indicates 6 cores and 6 logical processors. On this box it happens

sometimes that CPU hits 100% should I add extra engines?

4. In the default data cache I see recommendation to use 'relaxed LRU replacement policy' and adding a large I/O pool for this cache. What is the impact

of this on SAP as application? This seems to be a farely advanced configuration.
