Dear Gurus,

I need suggestion and advice on the below issue facing. I'm trying to restore the database on to the DR site manually which was taken from the HO Production server and did restored the backup successfully .While trying to load one of the transaction log it has thrown me error stating

Msg 926, Level 14, State 2:

Server 'SID', Line 1:

Database 'SID' cannot be opened. An earlier attempt at recovery marked it

'suspect'. Check the ASE errorlog for information as to the cause.

According to the log on the DR server ,it shows log

00:0003:00000:00161:2013/09/03 14:40:48.22 server  Error: 3474, Severity: 21, State: 1

00:0003:00000:00161:2013/09/03 14:40:48.22 server  During redo the page timestamp value is less than old timestamp from log. Page #=9161, object id = 254893940, page timestamp=0000 6032e345. Log old timestamp=0000 663bd9d5. Log record marker = (20026859, 62).

But its strange that i have not missed any transaction log sequence .Now im not able to make the database online also with the previous transaction and back restored .According to the information it states could be the database or transaction logs could be corrupted but if i try to restore the other backup file it gives me same error

Msg 926, Level 14, State 2:

Server 'SID', Line 1:

Database 'SID' cannot be opened. An earlier attempt at recovery marked it

'suspect'

Please suggest me to proceed further.

Sybase Transcation log backup issue

Hi All,

I am trying to take backup for Sybase database and transcation log as per below link,

http://scn.sap.com/thread/3245201

I was successfully able to take the backup for database without any issues but when I try to take the transcations log backup I end up with below error,

1> sp_dumptrans SBP

2> go

Msg 4208, Level 16, State 1:

Server 'SBP', Line 1:

DUMP TRANsaction to a dump device is not allowed while the trunc. log on chkpt.

option is enabled.  Disable the option with sp_dboption, then use DUMP DATABASE,

before trying again. (Return status = 4208)

1>

Later after checking the SAP guide for Sybase database we tried to setup below options,

=====================================================================================

Ensure that a complete sequence of transaction log archives is available at all times

For your SAP database <DBSID> it is mandatory that you ensure that the archived log sequence

remains unbroken.

To ensure a complete log sequence, set the following database options:

trunc log on chkpt, false

full logging for all, true

enforce dump tran sequence, true

You have to set these options after a successful  DUMP DATABASE has been performed and before any

Set these options using the stored procedure sp_dboption to change database options. (Syntax:sp_dboption [dbname, optname, {true | false}] ). You must change to the master database to be able to change options for a database

========================================================================

My question is do I need to login to Master database to set this options because when I try to set the below option

sp_dboption 'master', 'trunc. log on chkpt', 'false'

I end up with below error,

xyz.JPG

When I try to login to master database with sa user I could not,I gave the same password which i gave it during the installation

Pelase advise on how to proceed further

Sybase ASE DB Backup Configuration Issue

Hello All,

We are using Sybase ASE 15.7.0.42 on RHEL Linux. I am trying to configure the DB backups for the first time.  After going through SAP Note 1588316 , I created the dump configurations for both the DB and the temp logs. The local filesystems are also in place. However when I try to set the parameter 'enable dump configuration' using sp_configure it gives me an error as below;

1> sp_configure "enable dump configuration" , 1
2> go
Msg 18124, Level 16, State 1:

I was going through a few other links and found that there is another parameter 'enforce dump configuration' which should be set to 1 to enforce the dump configurations that I have created.

Request somebody to shed some light on this issue.

Thanks

SAP ERP 60 EHP6 on Sybase ASE: installation problem

$

Hi,

we have a "strange" error during SAP ERP 6.0 EHP6 on SYBASE installation in phase "Sybase ASE Database system parameters".

Note: hard disk size exceeded for location /Sybase/S01 (requires 4 Gb). Minimal size of
the database devices are 88G for data and 10G for log

File system /Sybase/S01 is:

/dev/mapper/vg_dev-lv_sybase_S01      5.0G   69M  4.7G   2% /sybase/S01

We used the following version of installer (the last): 70SWPM10SP01_3-20009701.sar

We found SAP Note 1765985 – “SYB: Sybase ASE setup reports false low disk space warning”, but it didn’t help us to solve problem.

We launched command “/bin/df –Pk” as suggested, but all file system are displayed, so we set (in shell where we started SAPINST) environment variable CHECK_DISK_SPACE=OFF, but the error occurred again.

Our error is similar to that dsscibed in the following blog post, but the solution in not good for us

On the Road to an Enterprise Cloud

Customer demands for support of virtualization are rapidly growing. SAP offers support for running its applications in virtualized cloud environments. You can start your projects and can bring the newest innovations from SAP into production in a matter of weeks instead of months, with complete flexibility of deployment choice.
SAP Landscape Virtualization Management (LVM) is available for SAP on Sybase ASE.

For more information, read this article, and SAP Notes 1630050 and 1492000. June 2013

Getting Started with Sybase ASE and the SAP System

The aim of this document is to help you get started with the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) database that is run with an SAP system. August 2013

Overview Video: SAP Sybase ASE

Watch this video to learn about the benefits that SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise brings to SAP customers, and how it can impact your business.

DBA Cockpit: Automatic Table Maintenance for Sybase ASE

Maintaining tables, indexes and data partitions is crucial for productive database systems. Continuous insertion, update and deletion of data induces fragmentation, bad cluster ratios and inaccurate optimizer statistics. The article shows how the DBA Cockpit and its automatic table maintenance for Sybase ASE ensures good cluster ratios on tables and indexes, frees up unused space and ensures accurate optimizer statistics.

General Availability of SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15.7

SAP Sybase ASE 15.7 is generally available since September 2011.

SAP on Sybase ASE is available for SAP Business Suite 7i2010, 7i2011, and 7i2013.

SAP and Violin Memory accelerating customer applications in transaction-driven environments

Violin named #1 market share leader by Gartner offering 6000 Series Flash Memory Arrays certified for interoperability with SAP® Sybase® Adaptive Server® Enterprise

Organizations across the globe are trying to be faster; faster in processing information, faster in responding to demanding customers, faster in closing the books; overall faster any way they can.  In this fast-paced world every minute counts and the ability to do more in less time becomes a key advantage for organizations. So if every minute counts, then the possibility of running enterprise applications 10x faster becomes a huge competitive advantage for any organization.

SAP and Violin Memory have joined forces to provide exactly the speed that organizations are looking for. In a recent press release from SAP and Violin Memory, Kevin Ichhpurani, Senior Vice President Head of Business Development and Ecosystem Innovation said:

The Violin Flash Memory Arrays integrated with SAP Sybase ASE are a key solid-state storage component for the acceleration of business-critical applications from SAP,” and he continued:

The certification process showed that the arrays can deliver significant performance improvement over traditional disk-based systems, delivering substantial value to customers. In fact, during preliminary internal testing, we have seen 10x improvement in the performance of SAP Sybase ASE running on Violin Flash Memory.”

In the same press release it's mentioned that the Violin certification for interoperability with SAP Sybase ASE delivers reliability and accelerated performance across a range of enterprise applications. Used together, these solutions will provide customers with enhanced and simplified solutions that leverage the power of Violin Flash Memory Arrays and business-critical SAP applications to accelerate transaction-driven environments

So the benefits, which include immediate speed up and scalability, without requiring any changes to existing code or configuration are clear. However, there can be other challenges that accompany the transition to a new technology - including questions around migration, investment and total cost of ownership.

Don Basile, Violin Memory CEO directly addressed this exact point at SAPPHRE NOW Orlando 2013 in a panel, where he said:

“..It is less expensive than going to a legacy vendor…..  less expensive to deploy this technology this technology for you and you get an immediate benefitclick here for the full video

We're also delighted to report that according to a recent Gartner Report referenced ongigaom.com,Violin Memory has the lead in market share in storage arrays incorporating flash.

We invite you to comment about your experiences, plans, concerns, questions and any other topic around migrating to memory technology.

To explore implementing this technology, please contact Violin Memory's Global Vice President of Channels managing the SAP alliance: Shawn Blevins

Sorry to bother you, and thanks for reading my email Ive been researching about

Hi Folks, thanks for reading my questions

Ive been researching about doing update statistics on ASE 15.0.3 , and some things i cant find a clear docmentation referece...

1)  When doing a reorg rebuild, event that the indexes are effectively rebuilt, the statistics for all columns in the indexes are not collected along it.

Only for the leading column for the PK. So, its necessary to rerun update index statistics, in order to gather the statistics for the remaining columns in the indexes. Is this correct? If its necessary to collect the indexes, it would be realy helpful to DBAs to have this information on the following link

http://infocenter.sybase.com/help/topic/com.sybase.help.ase_15.0.commands/html/commands/commands78.htm

2)  Our standard procedure is to run “update index statistics table“ for all of our tables. We are planning to use sampling , but it seems  necessary to collect

a full table statistics for the given table in order to have sampling working as expected. Is it correct?  (we are using DOL tables). Could be possible to run update statistics on the PK first in order to have ASE to start using sampling properly?

3)  Its not clear to me if using “sampling” effectively makes update statistics to collect a lower number of pages. Im in doubt if ASE effectively reads all the pages

but discard information, or if it somehow uses the OAM in order to skip reading pages…    Is there a good reference for this?

An earlier attempt at recovery marked it 'suspect' in sybase .Could not make database Online.
